I approach painting as a way of moving inward. The work is not meant to describe a place, but to settle on what matters.
When I paint, I am trying to get closer to something I recognize but may not fully understand. Painting gives me a way to hold on to it longer.
Jeffrey Malcolm is a Toronto-based Canadian landscape and figurative painter working in oil and mixed media. He holds a BA in Visual Arts from the University of Western Ontario (1994).
Following a career in graphic design and brand consultancy, he shifted his focus to painting and established a studio practice in 2022.
Malcolm’s current work continues his interest in change and impermanence, and in what remains as things pass.
Memory is part of this, although not always in a literal sense. An image may come from something experienced or simply something seen, but over time the distinction becomes less important. What interests Malcolm is how an image can become connected to something already within us, taking on the familiarity of a memory without necessarily belonging to one.
